Hunting the abundant Sitka blacktail deer is an extremely popular sport as well, these deer are the tastiest we have ever eaten! The Sitka blacktail spends most of the late spring to early fall in the high alpine mountains at or above tree line! This green grass diet with the long winters we see these deer getting lots of salt in their diet on the beaches and shorelines make these venison rich in flavor. A lot of “Ketchitonians” or locals enjoy the brisk mornings with walks around Ward and Carlanna lakes, whiles others take on the many trail systems southeast has to offer.

Other things a lot of us are seen doing are winter shrimping, fishing for steelhead, trout, or just combing the beaches for relics that wash up from other countries on a big high tide. We are blessed to watch the amazing Aurora Borealis “Northern Lights” quite often on the clear chilly winter nights. There is an app called AURORA. This is the locals’ most reliable way of knowing when the chances to see this phenomenon are.

The colors are breathtaking and sitting with a glass of wine or a cup of hot chocolate on the deck overlooking the water is priceless. Other activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and birdwatching are popular as well. Some will even go on local float plane sightseeing trips to the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness, untouched, uninhabited covering almost 3585 square miles (about half the area of New Jersey). Regardless Ketchikan has endless opportunities in the winter and can be incredibly fun and rewarding!
